Board of Medicine reopens Prescription Monitoring Program

10 December 2009

After a security breach some months ago, the Virginia Board of Medicine's (BOM) Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) was shut down. After initial investigations did not readily identify who breached the system or what data was accessed, the PMP returned to limited operation in which prescribers could send written inquiries to the PMP. Since then, new hardware and software has been implemented, and all social security numbers have been removed. On October 1, the PMP returned to around-the-clock electronic service.

Since October 1, 600 new prescribers have registered to use the PMP. The BOM encourages physicians to register for this program and has prepared a brochure to better explain the program.
